Lately I've taken an interest in boat building. Mostly due to a hair-brained idea to cross a large body of fresh water without having to burn fuel or pay the fare on a toll boat. But then I discovered how much fun it is to work with wood, and it's even more fun to be out in the water in a boat you built yourself.

This is the first boat-building post to show up on my site, but it's actually the third kayak I've built. The first two were "one-sheet" plywood stitch and glue kayaks, each 92 inches in length. This boat will be just short of twelve feet. It is made of pine, cut from a wide board to get a nice quarter-sawn grain.
